Stephen ‘Spling’ Aspeling is a South African movie critic based in Cape Town. Starting in 2007, his insightful and thought-provoking reviews have been featured across radio, television, print and streaming platforms.

Spling is a fixture on South African airwaves. He currently hosts the popular WKNDwatchlist on CapeTalk’s Lunch with Pippa Hudson, reviews movies on the Expresso morning show and previously hosted over 600 episodes of Talking Movies on Fine Music Radio.

Beyond broadcasting, Spling is deeply embedded in the film industry. He is a member of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), the Writers’ Guild of South Africa (WGSA), and is the proud founder of the Film Critics Association of South Africa (FCASA).

When he isn’t evaluating and championing emerging filmmakers at local film schools, he helps filmmakers and screenwriters refine their stories through his script consultancy, reviewmyscript.com. He shares his love for cinema in his book, ‘The Essence of Dreams: An Anthology of Film Reviews’.
