Stephen ‘Spling’ Aspeling is a South African movie critic based in Cape Town. Starting in 2007, his work has appeared in various online publications, magazines, newspapers, and streaming services. He is also a radio broadcaster, script editor, judge for film schools, juror for film festivals, podcaster, creative consultant, and host.
Stephen is known for his insightful and thought-provoking reviews. He has a deep understanding of film and is able to connect with his audience in a way that makes his reviews feel like a conversation. He has presented over 600 episodes of his movie review program, “Talking Movies,” on Fine Music Radio.
He is a member of FIPRESCI (the International Federation of Film Critics), the Writers’ Guild of South Africa (WGSA), and the founder of the Film Critics Association of South Africa (FCASA). Stephen is the author of “The Essence of Dreams: An Anthology of Film Reviews,” and runs a script consultancy called reviewmyscript.com.
